What does a Mist Collector do on the Shopfloor

CNC machining, turning, grinding and EDM throw coolant and lubricant off the tool as a fine aerosol. This isn’t a splash you can wipe up. It’s mist that hangs in the air, drifts across the shop, and settles on floors, machines and people. The finest fraction stays airborne longest and travels deepest into the lung. A mist collector’s job is to pull that aerosol at the machine, separate the oil and emulsion back out of it, and return clean air.

How the machine works

The NAF mist collector, built on AFS technology, cleans the air mechanically rather than by chemistry, in two stages.

Five-stage pre-separation does most of the work. It combines metal-mesh separators and filter fleeces with the Long Life baffle-plate separator at its core. That separator removes particles down to 2.0 micron and is self-cleaning: the captured oil and emulsion drain back out under gravity, so the core stays maintenance-free in service instead of clogging and needing replacement.

An H13 HEPA final stage then removes more than 99.5% of the residual particles at 0.4 micron, the fine aerosol the pre-separation didn’t catch. Because the pre-separation is efficient, the HEPA sees a light load, so it lasts a long time rather than being the part you’re always changing.

Why does it belong in your process

Mist collection is easy to defer because the mist looks harmless. On the floor and in the numbers, it isn’t.

Protects accuracy

Mist settles on ways, scales, sensors and reference surfaces. A misted, warm enclosure combined with machine heat drives thermal and dimensional error, and on a precision job that shows up as parts drifting out of tolerance. Pulling the aerosol at the source keeps the machine, and the measurement, clean.

Keeps the floor safe

Oil mist that lands on the floor is a slip hazard, and on every other surface it’s a film that builds up until the whole area feels greasy. That’s a housekeeping cost and a safety exposure at once, and general ventilation only spreads it thinner.

Returns coolant you already paid for

Mist that leaves the machine as aerosol is coolant and lubricant walking out of your process. A self-draining separator sends the captured emulsion and oil back toward the tank instead of into the air, so less of what you bought is lost to the atmosphere.

The health case

Fine oil and coolant mist is a respiratory irritant, and health and safety agencies set occupational exposure limits for oil mist for that reason. (Exposure limits for oil mist are set by regulators such as OSHA and reviewed by NIOSH; check the limit that applies to your site.) Capturing at the machine keeps the aerosol out of the breathing zone rather than diluting it into the hall.

Hall cooling

Machine tools give off heat, and a well-insulated modern workshop traps it, so summer, not winter, is the real problem: heat build-up causes dimensional errors and lost production. AFS central systems can pair mist extraction with workshop air exchange, so the same system that cleans the machine exhaust also removes heat from the hall. On a multi-machine floor that’s worth planning as one concept rather than two.

What to ask for when you specify one

Start with volume flow, per machine

The specification begins with how much air each machine needs and whether you’re treating one station or several from a central unit. NAF’s mist collectors run from 600 to 4,000 m³/h across a range of model sizes, with motors from 0.55 to 3.7 kW, and can be mounted on the machine or installed centrally. Size to the machine’s actual mist load, not to the nearest available unit.

Beyond flow, a few decisions shape the build:

  • Single-station or central. A compact unit on one machining centre, or one central system serving several machines across the hall, decided by your layout and how many machines run at once.
  • Noise. A sound-insulated housing option brings operating noise below 72 dB where the unit sits close to people.
  • Service cycle. The separators are designed to drain themselves, with a filter check on roughly a four-week cycle, so the maintenance is predictable rather than a surprise.
  • Post-filtration. HEPA and metal-mesh box options where the final air needs to be cleaner still.
